Mothers' Day Message 2012 from the President. PDF Print E-mail

On the day designated for honoring mothers, celebrating motherhood, maternal bonds and the influences of mothers in society, the Guyana Public Service Union extends its best wishes to all mothers in Guyana and worldwide on the occasion of Mother’s Day 2012.

Mothers are the main pillars in homes, they not only give birth they guide and nurture generations of children and are builders of communities, the fabric of societies and nations. Under their love, care and guidance, children and by extension society and its institutions flourish. Even when many mothers are beset by financial and other pressures, which often threaten to derail the progress of their households, mothers are known to self-sacrifice for the family’s sake. Individuals who stand in need of helping hands are never refused, as mothers’ arms embraces with tender love and care and at times would reach out strongly to the misguided in forms of discipline.

International Nurses Day 2012 Message from the President. PDF Print E-mail

The Guyana Public Service Union joins with the rest of the world in observing International Nurses Day 2012, under the theme “Closing the Gap, from Evidence to Action”. This theme is timely since it permits nurses to seek and identify what evidence to use, how to translate and interpret that evidence, how to put that new found knowledge and understanding into everyday use. They will determine whether the anticipated outcomes are sufficiently important to change practice and utilize more efficiently and effectively precious and scarce resources that is always desperately needed everywhere.
Nurses in today’s society are taking on new and dynamic roles and responsibilities within the capacity of their professional practice, often times without the corresponding recognition and remuneration for being an essential member of the modern nursing and health care team.

Letter to the Print Media PDF Print E-mail

Dear Mr. Editor,

It was very disheartening following the budget debate, from within the Parliament itself and by reference to reports from the various arms of the media in Guyana and further afield. The Government elements and their collaborators would have us believe that the budget is pro-working class, but as you know my opinions differ in that regard. In support of my opinion I found an article By American writer Stephan Richter entitled “Catholics Vs. Victorians: The Battle for the Future of America”, dated April 17, 2012, which puts my views in perspective in the following excerpt, which was a core finding of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that offered several moral criteria to help guide difficult budgetary decisions, based on the tenets of Catholic social teaching.

GPSU's Position on Contract Employment PDF Print E-mail

The Union wishes to express its concern at the coercive method used by government functionaries in getting public servants out to protest in front of the Parliament Building on April 18, 2012. The GPSU was inundated with telephone calls from its members who were told that it was mandatory for them to attend the protest action being conducted at the Parliament Building. The GPSU wishes to state that this action by Government functionaries is illegal and unconstitutional and had advised public servants not to attend.
